Are you wondering if you should start a Paleo, Intermittent Fasting or even a Keto diet for weight loss? Do you want to find out which diet can potentially suit your lifestyle and kick start your results? Allow me to breakdown these 3 popular diets for you, to shed some light on their benefits and whether they can really suit you...
Finding the perfect weight loss diet is a very individual thing...
I personally believe that you have to fit the right diet into your lifestyle and make sure that you're both suitable for one another... almost like a little relationship if you will.
Once you form a great relationship with your new diet and learn how to fit it into your busy lifestyle, you will truly see some amazing weight loss results... without having to starve yourself.
Paleo, Intermittent fasting and Keto are 3 amazing diets that you can start, but all 3 are quite different in the foods they allow and the type of lifestyle and preferences they suit...
Let's briefly look at each diet and what they're all about...
WHAT IS THE PALEO DIET?
The Paleo Diet focuses on eating only foods that you can hunt and gather, sort of like our ancestors who lived in the stone ages, hunting for their food...
This type of diet cuts out all processed foods such as breads and cereals, lollies and sugary foods... You're screaming already, right?
The Paleo Diet focuses on foods like, meat, eggs, fish, nuts, greens, vegetables to fuel your body with quality nutrition.
By cutting out all processed foods and focusing on quality, nutrient dense nutrition, you can really reduce your inflammation, lower your insulin spikes through the day, improve your immune system and dramatically lower the risk of lifestyle diseases (heart attacks, diabetes etc)
I really enjoy eating about 80% of my diet in a paleo style, because above all, I want to focus on clean, wholesome nutrition, that is minimally processed... I want to be able to treat my body like a temple and live a quality life, free of illnesses.
WHAT IS THE INTERMITTENT FASTING DIET?
The intermittent fasting diet is more of a 'lifestyle diet' which allows you to go through patterns of fasting (no food) to windows of eating, based on your lifestyle.
For example, fasting from 8pm to 2pm (18 hours fast) and then eating from 2pm to 8pm (6 hour eating window) The fasting usually allows only tea, plain black coffee and water to be consumed and within your eating period, you consume all your required calories. That's usually 2-3 bigger meals per day.
The purpose of intermittent fasting, is to really fit the diet into a busy lifestyle, suitable for people who prefer to eat bigger meals within specific blocks of time. Usually around your training time I find works best, to ensure no fat gains.
Intermittent fasting works great to reduce insulin levels while fasting, decreases inflammation in your body and increases your growth hormone.
I love fasting before my training sessions, which makes me feel a greater focus in the gym, my stomach feels great while working out (I hate feeling bloated from my breakfast, while working out) and by the end of my workout I feel super hungry, making my first meal of the day, that extra bit delicious.
WHAT IS THE KETO DIET?
The Keto Diet is a low carb diet, where your body uses ketones for energy. It's normally a low carb and a high fat diet. Eating foods such as cheese, fatty meats, butter and cream, nuts, avocados and healthy oils. And avoiding foods such as pastas, breads, cereals, higher carb veggies such as potatoes etc...
Keto dieters usually eat around 30g of carbs, and upwards of 50% of their daily calories coming from fats.
By eating higher fats and low carbs, your body becomes efficient at using fats for fuel instead of carbs and can be a super effective weight loss diet.
Keto dieting helps to lower insulin levels and reduce the risk of a lot of lifestyle diseases.
Personally I prefer the lower carb diets such as the keto diet for weight loss, because of the reduced insulin spikes, which generally leads to faster results in the gym.
And the big plus for me with the keto diet is that I get to eat, Bacon, Eggs, Avocados and even Cheese... mmhmm is that even a diet? Yup, a delicious one...
Now that we have a rough understanding of these 3 diets, let's have a look at some of their benefits, which can make them suitable for you...
THE PALEO DIET CAN SUIT YOU IF YOU:
1. Love eating wholesome and minimally processed foods.
2. Love the natural aspect of dieting and really want to reduce your body's inflammation.
3. Are at risk at some lifestyle related diseases, including diabetes.
THE INTERMITTENT FASTING DIET CAN SUIT YOU IF YOU:
1. Are a busy individual who needs a 'lifestyle' based diet.
2. You love eating bigger meals in smaller blocks of time.
3. Don't mind fasting, for 12-16 hours.
THE KETO DIET CAN SUIT YOU IF YOU:
1. Want to lose weight faster.
2. You're not a big fan of carbs in your diet.
3. You prefer eating lots of fats instead of carbs.
MY FINAL TAKE
Whichever diet you choose to start, my advice is that you try to tailor it to your current lifestyle and eating preferences, because that can really help you stick to the diet in the long term and reach your target weight goal.
I personally combine a few elements of all 3 of the paleo, intermittent fasting and keto diets, because I like to:
1. Eat clean for 5-6 days per week, of minimally processed, natural foods.
2. I like to fast before training.
3. I love to eat higher fats and low carbs on my 'clean' days.
Don't feel stuck to a particular diet and feel free to experiment and see which diet works best for you, because we are all different and our bodies respond in a unique way when eating certain foods.
